Zach Baglia, Antonio Martin lead Green to Federal League football win over Hoover

GREEN — Zach Baglia and Antonio Martin did plenty Friday night, enough to ensure Green will be back at home in Week 11.

Baglia scored four touchdowns and Martin added a pair to help the Bulldogs (6-3, 2-3) win a back-and-forth game, which locked up a Round 1 playoff game at home, according to JoeEitel.com. They each returned a kickoff for a touchdown during a wild opening minute of the second quarter.

After a 7-7 first quarter, the teams accounted for four TDs in a 35-second stretch within the first 42 seconds of the second quarter.

  • Seven seconds into the second quarter, Zach Braucher’s 39-yard TD run put Hoover (4-5, 1-4) ahead 14-7.
  • Baglia answered with 79-yard kickoff return TD for Green, cutting the deficit to 14-13.
  • On the first play after Green’s ensuing kickoff, Hoover’s Mason Ashby took off for a 66-yard TD run down the left sideline. Hoover missed a 2-point conversion and led 20-13 with 11:30 left in the half.
  • Green then returned another kickoff for a TD. This time it was Martin going 77 yards after fielding a squib kick. With 11:18 left in the half, the game was 20-20.

Hoover regained the lead late in the half. Braucher’s 9-yard TD run with 29 seconds left in the half put the Vikings ahead 27-20.

Green opened with the ball in the third quarter and used its ground game, featuring Jordan Beyl, to move down the field before Baglia scored his third TD of the game. He caught a 16-yard TD pass from Tyson Hunka and the Bulldogs tied the game 27-27 with 8:51 left in the third.

His fourth TD followed not long after. Baglia caught a 24-yard TD pass from Hunka with 4:01 left in the third. A missed PAT left Green ahead 33-27.

The Vikings regained the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter when they went for it on fourth-and-4 from the Green 24. Ashby caught a 24-yard TD pass on the right side from Braucher, who rolled right on the play. Paul Koskovich hit the PAT and Hoover led 34-33 with 11:51 left in the game.

Green once again had an answer. Martin’s 23-yard TD run through the middle put Green back ahead with 9:33 left. Kaden Gregory added a 2-point conversion catch on a pass from Hunka for a 41-34 lead.

Baglia gained 149 all-purpose yards, including 71 on six catches. Hunka threw for 128 yards and three TDs on 11-of-19 passing, with no interceptions. Beyl rushed for 84 yards on 16 carries. Martin added 53 yards on five carries, as he gained 162 all-purpose yards.
